# She Will Never Come Home Again
*A Record of an Interview About War*
**Editor’s Note**
The following text is based on an interview with a mother who said she lost her daughter in the February 28, 2026 strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, Iran. She asked that her name and exact location remain undisclosed.
Personal details attributed to the mother — including her daughter’s belongings, drawings and final morning at home — come from the interview and have not been independently verified through public records.
The factual background concerning the school strike has been updated to reflect investigations and reporting available as of September 24, 2026.

## I
She handed me a piece of paper.
It was a drawing.
In the picture there was an airplane and a very small house.
Next to the house stood a girl.
“This is what she drew,” she said.
Her daughter was ten years old.

February 28, 2026 was supposed to be an ordinary school day.
That morning, Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, in Iran’s southern Hormozgan Province, was struck during the opening hours of the war between the United States and Israel and Iran.
Children were still at school.
Early reports produced sharply varying casualty figures. On March 5, UNICEF reported that 168 girls had been killed and said most of the victims were schoolchildren between seven and twelve years old.
Later investigations substantially revised that picture.
Sky News identified 120 students killed at the school — **73 boys and 47 girls, aged six to thirteen** — as well as 26 teachers. Its investigation verified the identities of 152 victims. Amnesty International separately concluded that **156 people were killed, including 120 children**.
The most recent major United Nations investigation went further.
In September 2026, the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran told the UN Human Rights Council that the school, which it described as a readily identifiable primary school, had been struck by **two cruise missiles**.
The Mission said credible sources indicated that **157 people were killed, including 123 boys and girls**.
Because different investigations use slightly different casualty counts, the precise final total remains disputed.
What is no longer seriously in doubt is that a very large number of children were killed.

## III
She did not know any of those numbers at the time.
All she remembers is the explosion.
“The windows shook,” she said.
“And then people were shouting in the street.”
At first she thought a nearby military facility had been hit.
There was a reason for that assumption.
The school was situated beside, or within the historical perimeter of, a compound associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
But investigations by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International found that the school itself was functioning as a civilian educational facility. Human Rights Watch reported that it had been separated from the military compound by a wall and had its own entrance. It found no evidence that the school was being used for military purposes.
Then someone said the school had been hit.
She started running.

## IV
The school no longer looked like a school.
People were searching through the rubble.
They were looking for children.
For schoolbags.
For shoes.
She said the first thing she recognized was a pink shoe.
“That was hers.”
She stopped speaking for a long moment before continuing.

## V
For months, the question of who fired the weapons remained publicly unresolved.
The United States did not initially accept responsibility, and Israel said it was not aware of having conducted a strike in the area.
But evidence accumulated.
Amnesty International concluded in March that the United States was responsible for the strike and said the attack showed a failure to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians. Its investigation found that the school building itself had been struck with guided weapons together with structures in the adjacent IRGC compound.
Investigations by the Associated Press and Sky News later pointed in the same direction. AP reported evidence consistent with U.S. Tomahawk missiles and noted that Pentagon strike maps showed U.S. attacks in the Minab area. Sky News said seven weapons and military experts who examined the evidence concluded that it pointed to U.S. responsibility.
Then, in September, the United Nations fact-finding mission reached its strongest conclusion yet.
It said there were **reasonable grounds to believe that the airstrike was carried out by the United States** and that it amounted to the **war crime of making a civilian object the object of an attack**.
The United States rejected the UN mission’s findings.
As of September 24, 2026, the Pentagon had still not publicly released a final investigation into the Minab strike. Earlier reporting on a preliminary U.S. assessment indicated that American forces were likely responsible, but may have acted on outdated information about the site.

I asked her whether she felt hatred.
She thought for a long time.
“I don’t know who to hate,” she said.
She said the news always had explanations.
National security.
Military targets.
Strategic strikes.
Retaliation.
Intelligence.
Mistakes.
But those words felt distant to her.
She remembered only one thing.
“That morning she was looking for her eraser.”
—
## VII
I asked what she still keeps.
She said:
A schoolbag.
Three notebooks.
And many drawings.
She picked up the paper again.
“She wanted to be a pilot.”
She smiled slightly.
“But not this kind of airplane.”

Wars are often recorded in numbers.
Missiles.
Targets.
Bases.
Casualties.
Investigations.
But numbers do not contain a person’s life.
They do not say:
She liked drawing.
She liked pink shoes.
She was ten years old.
And one morning she left home for school.
She never came home again.

**Record Note — Updated September 24, 2026**
The Minab school strike occurred on **February 28, 2026**, at Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Hormozgan Province, Iran.
Early casualty reports differed significantly. UNICEF initially reported 168 girls killed. Later investigations established that both boys and girls were among the dead. Sky News identified 120 student victims — 73 boys and 47 girls — while Amnesty International reported 156 total deaths, including 120 children.
In September 2026, the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran reported **157 deaths, including 123 children**, and said the school was struck by two cruise missiles. The Mission found reasonable grounds to believe that the United States carried out the attack and that the strike amounted to the war crime of making a civilian object the object of an attack.
The United States has rejected the UN mission’s conclusions. A final Pentagon investigation has not been made public as of the date of this update.
The interviewee’s personal account and details concerning her daughter are presented as testimony and are separate from facts independently established through public investigations.
