Xiaohuamei, widely known as the “Xuzhou chained woman,” was trafficked from Yunnan in 1998, sold multiple times, and eventually brought to Feng County, Jiangsu.
Chinese authorities later confirmed that she had been subjected to prolonged abuse and confinement. Dong Zhimin restrained her with cloth, rope, and an iron chain around her neck and kept her in degrading living conditions.
In April 2023, Dong Zhimin was sentenced to nine years in prison for abuse and unlawful detention. Five people involved in trafficking Xiaohuamei received prison terms ranging from eight to thirteen years.
The last detailed official update on Xiaohuamei’s condition was published in April 2023. Authorities said she remained hospitalized, was physically stable, could eat and dress with assistance, and could communicate in simple ways, but continued to have cognitive impairment.
In February 2025, former journalist and lawyer Li Hualiang reported, citing local sources in Feng County, that Xiaohuamei was still living in a local psychiatric hospital and had not returned either to Dongji village or to her original home in Yunnan.
As of September 19, 2026, no later detailed and reliable public account of her current condition could be found.
Important questions therefore remain unanswered:
Where is she now?
Is she still hospitalized?
Who independently represents her interests?
Can she freely express her wishes?
Who decides where she lives?
Can an independent lawyer, social worker, or other trusted third party verify that her rights and dignity are being protected?
Medical privacy should be respected. But privacy is not the same as disappearance from independent oversight.
This case should not be remembered only as the story of “a woman who was once chained.”
Xiaohuamei is still a living victim.
The criminal cases ended.
Her story did not.
Remember her name: Xiaohuamei.
