65-WORLDWIDE MARITIME AND INLAND WATERWAY CASUALTY ARCHIVE 2000 -10.28.2026

“Yet as an archivist, I must rely on official records. If the official narrative is flawed from the start, the truth may remain forever lost.”

SINGLE OCCURRENCES WITH AT LEAST 10 REPORTED OR RECOGNIZED FATALITIES
Public-source compilation | Research cutoff of the original compilation: 28 October 2026

This edition contains 79 entries: 62 civilian-vessel entries in Part A; 11 events involving estimates, missing persons or disputed totals in Part B; 5 non-combat military-vessel casualties in Part C; and 1 deliberate attack for reference in Part D.

The scope includes maritime, coastal, river and lake vessel casualties involving ferries, passenger ships, cargo vessels, fishing vessels, excursion boats and vessels carrying migrants. Non-combat military casualties are listed separately from civilian transport events. Production accidents at fixed offshore installations are outside this register’s scope.

This is a non-exhaustive compilation with identifiable sources, not a complete worldwide census. Omission does not mean that an event did not occur. The entries must not be used to calculate national accident rates or the worldwide total number of accidents.

Confirmed deaths, presumed deaths, missing persons and estimated total fatalities are different measures. Part A includes events for which official or commonly used records recognize at least 10 fatalities; some totals include people whose bodies were not recovered. Part A is therefore not a list limited to events with at least 10 recovered bodies. Part B retains relevant events whose fatality figures have not been reconciled and must not be added directly to a strict confirmed-death total.

Each figure applies to the date and scope of its cited source. A figure explicitly described as an interim count is not a final toll as of the research cutoff. Disagreements are retained rather than replaced by unsupported precision. This English edition translates the existing compilation; it is not a new investigation or an update of every casualty total.

A collision involving two vessels is counted as one occurrence. Separate sinkings involving different vessels or dates are not combined. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, injury numbers have not been verified; this does not mean zero injuries.

Evidence status distinguishes official investigations, institutional publications, news reports and event-specific secondary sources. A secondary-source entry does not imply that the original investigation report was examined. Descriptions summarize events without independently determining legal responsibility.
